About the Trip
Say "Munnar" and most people picture the same thing: hillsides carpeted in emerald tea, wave upon wave of it, disappearing into the mist. This is the heart of South India's tea country, a British-era hill station high in the Kerala Western Ghats, and it earns its nickname as the "honeymoon capital of South India" the moment the fog lifts off the plantations.
It's a longer haul from Bangalore than most weekend hills — around 490 km — but this trip makes the distance worth it, pairing the classic Munnar sights with two things you won't get everywhere: a bone-rattling jeep climb to the Kolukkumalai sunrise, reputedly one of the highest tea estates in the world, and a live Kalaripayattu show, Kerala's ancient martial art. It runs overnight from Bangalore so your first morning starts in the tea.
Below is the plan we follow, what to expect at each stop, and the practical details — costs, best season and tips — worth knowing before you go.
Recommended Itinerary – 2 Days in Munnar
🌙 Friday Night – Departure (Day Zero)
Pickups begin around 9:00 PM on Friday across Bangalore, and the bus travels overnight — it's a long climb into the Western Ghats, so settle in and sleep. You'll roll into Munnar around 10:00–11:00 AM the next morning.
🌄 Day 1 – Lakes, Waterfalls & a Kalari Show
🚤 Ponmudi Dam & Echo Point
After breakfast and check-in, ease into Munnar with its lakes. Ponmudi Dam offers speed boating and viewpoints over the water, and nearby Echo Point is exactly what it sounds like — shout across the hills and they shout back. Both are gentle, scenic ways to spend the first afternoon.
💧 Ripple Waterfalls & Zipline
Next up, Ripple Waterfalls — a pretty cascade with a zipline running across it for anyone wanting a rush of adrenaline with their scenery.
🔥 Kalari Kshetra – A Kalaripayattu Performance
The evening's highlight is a live Kalaripayattu show — Kerala's ancient martial art, often called one of the oldest fighting systems in the world. Expect lightning-fast footwork, spinning swords and shields, and performers leaping clean through rings of fire. Dinner and an overnight stay follow.
🌄 Day 2 – Kolukkumalai Sunrise & Tea Trails
🌅 Kolukkumalai Sunrise Jeep Ride
The reason for the 7:00 AM checkout. Kolukkumalai — reputedly one of the highest tea estates in the world, at around 7,000 ft — is reachable only by a rugged, jolting jeep ride up a rough mountain track. You climb in the dark and arrive to watch the sun rise over a sea of clouds, with the peaks of the Western Ghats floating above the mist. It is, for many, the single best thing on the trip. Jaguar Rock nearby adds another dramatic viewpoint.
🍃 Tea Museum & Zipline Over Tea Gardens
Back down in Munnar, the Tea Museum tells the story of how the British turned these hills into plantations from 1879 onward — with working machinery and a tasting. Right by it, a 600-metre zipline sends you soaring over the tea gardens themselves.
🌿 Periyakanal Falls & Lockhart Gap
The last stops keep it scenic: the Periyakanal Waterfalls, and the Lockhart Gap viewpoint, where the tea estates roll away to the horizon and the road cuts a dramatic line through the hills. Then the long drive home begins.
🌙 Return to Bangalore
Munnar is a long way from Bangalore, so the return is an overnight one, with dinner en route — expect to reach the city in the very early hours, around 4:00–5:00 AM. It's a big weekend, but the tea hills and that sunrise make every kilometre count.

FAQs
1. How far is Munnar from Bangalore?
Around 490 km — one of the longer weekend drives from Bangalore, at roughly 10 hours through the Western Ghats. This trip does it overnight both ways, so you spend your days in Munnar rather than on the road.
2. What is Kolukkumalai, and is the jeep ride worth it?
Kolukkumalai is a tea estate perched at around 7,000 ft — reputedly among the highest in the world — reachable only by a rugged jeep track. You go up before dawn to watch the sunrise over a sea of clouds. The ride is genuinely bumpy, but almost everyone rates the sunrise as the highlight of the trip.
3. Why is Munnar called the honeymoon capital of South India?
For its cool climate, misty tea-covered hills and romantic viewpoints — it's long been a favourite honeymoon destination. Munnar sits at about 1,600 m in Kerala's Western Ghats, and its name means "three rivers," for the confluence where the town grew up.
4. What is the best time to visit Munnar?
September to March, for pleasant weather, clear skies and the best chance of a good Kolukkumalai sunrise. The monsoon (June–August) is lush and green but wet, and the Kolukkumalai jeep track and viewpoints can be washed out.
5. What is Kalaripayattu?
Kalaripayattu is a traditional martial art from Kerala, often described as one of the oldest fighting systems in the world. A live show blends acrobatic combat, weapons and dramatic fire stunts — a memorable evening's entertainment.
6. Is this trip suitable for families?
Yes, with two caveats: it's a long journey each way, and the Kolukkumalai jeep ride is bumpy (and optional). Beyond that, the lakes, tea gardens, Kalari show and waterfalls are enjoyable for all ages — just pack warm clothes for the cold pre-dawn start.

Fascinating facts about Munnar
🍃 Tea & Hills
The Town of Three Rivers
"Munnar" means "three rivers" — from moonu and aaru — for the confluence of the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundali rivers where the town sits, at around 1,600 m.
South India's Tea Capital
Munnar is the largest tea-growing region in South India. British planters laid out the first estates from 1879; the hills you see today are the result of nearly 150 years of tea.
A Flower That Blooms Once in 12 Years
The Neelakurinji, which carpets these hills in purple-blue, flowers only once every twelve years — turning whole slopes violet when it does.
🌄 Peaks & Wildlife
A Sunrise Above the Clouds
Kolukkumalai, reached by jeep at around 7,000 ft, is reputed to be one of the highest tea estates in the world — and its dawn view over a sea of cloud is the stuff of postcards.
Home of the Nilgiri Tahr
The nearby Eravikulam National Park shelters the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a wild mountain goat, and rises to Anamudi — the highest peak in South India.
Kerala's Ancient Martial Art
Kalaripayattu, performed at the Kalari show, is often cited as one of the oldest martial arts in the world — a living tradition of combat, weapons and fire.
Travel Tips
- Brace for a long drive. Munnar is ~490 km away — the overnight travel each way is part of the deal, so sleep on the bus.
- Dress warm for the sunrise. Kolukkumalai before dawn is cold and windy at 7,000 ft; a proper jacket makes or breaks it.
- The jeep ride is genuinely bumpy. Worth it, but skip it if you have a bad back — the sunrise can still be enjoyed from lower viewpoints.
- Carry cash. The jeep, entry tickets and tea-museum shop are largely cash-based.
- Go September–March. The clearest skies (and best sunrises) fall outside the heavy monsoon.
- Buy the tea. Fresh, high-grown Munnar and Kolukkumalai tea is the obvious — and excellent — souvenir.
- Keep the camera ready on Day 2. Between the sunrise, the tea gardens and Lockhart Gap, this is Munnar at its most photogenic.
