About the Trip

Every cup of coffee in India owes something to Chikmagalur. Legend has it that a wandering saint named Baba Budan brought the first coffee beans here from Arabia and planted them on the hills that now carry his name — and the district has been swathed in coffee ever since. But Chikmagalur is more than coffee: it's the highest peak in Karnataka, a string of waterfalls, misty trekking trails, and one of the finest carved temples in India, all within a couple of hours of one another.

It's a superb weekend escape from Bangalore, roughly 240 km northwest in the Western Ghats. Two days is enough to climb to the roof of Karnataka, chase a couple of waterfalls, walk a coffee estate, and stand before 900-year-old Hoysala stonework. This itinerary uses a Friday-night departure so you start the first day already in the hills.

Below is the plan we follow, what to expect at each stop, and the practical details — costs, best season and tips — worth knowing before you go.

Recommended Itinerary – 2 Days in Chikmagalur

🌙 Friday Night – Departure (Day Zero)

Pickups begin around 10:00 PM on Friday across South and East Bangalore, and the bus travels overnight into the Western Ghats. Sleep on the way — you'll arrive in the cool of the morning, ready for the peaks.

🌄 Day 1 – Peaks, Waterfalls & a Trek

🏔️ Mullayanagiri Peak

Misty green hills of the Chandra Drona range near Mullayanagiri, Chikmagalur

After checking in, head for the highlight: Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at 1,925 m. It sits in the Chandra Drona (Baba Budan) range, and a flight of 464 stone steps leads to a tiny shrine at the summit, named for a sage said to have meditated in the caves below. On a clear morning the view is endless ridges of blue-green hills; when the mist rolls in, you're walking through cloud.

💧 Jhari Waterfalls

The multi-tiered Jhari Falls cascading over dark rock in Chikmagalur

Next, Jhari Falls — also known as Buttermilk Falls — where the water tumbles down dark rock in the middle of a coffee estate. It's reached by a short jeep ride and a splash-friendly scramble; wear shoes you don't mind getting wet.

🥾 Z Point Trek & Hirekolale Lake

In the afternoon, stretch your legs on the Z Point trek — a scenic ridge walk that rewards you with sweeping valley views — and, if time allows, stop by the calm, hill-ringed Hirekolale Lake before dinner and an overnight stay.

🌄 Day 2 – Coffee Trails & Ancient Stone

💧 Hebbe & Kallathigiri Falls

Day two starts with water. Hebbe Falls drops in two stages deep inside the Kemmanagundi coffee estates, reached by a rugged jeep track through the plantations — dramatic after the monsoon. Nearby, Kallathigiri Falls spills down beside a small Shiva temple, a gentler and more accessible stop.

☕ Coffee & the Sleeping Lady Viewpoint

You can't come to the birthplace of Indian coffee and not stop for it. A visit to a local coffee estate and the Sleeping Lady Viewpoint — named for a distant ridge that resembles a reclining figure — pairs a fresh brew with one of the region's best-loved panoramas.

🛕 Belur – The Chennakeshava Temple

Intricate Hoysala soapstone carvings on the outer wall of the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur

The trip ends with something extraordinary: the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur. Commissioned by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE and built over three generations, its soapstone walls are covered in some of the most detailed carving in India — including the famous madanika bracket figures, of which 38 of the original 40 survive. In 2023 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas." Then the long drive home begins.

🌙 ~07:00 PM – Return to Bangalore

From Belur the bus turns for home, with dinner en route, reaching Bangalore around midnight to 1:00 AM. Two full days of peaks, waterfalls, coffee and ancient stone, and you're back for the week.

Travel Tips

  • Wear shoes with grip. Between Mullayanagiri's steps, the Z Point trek and rocky waterfall approaches, this is a hands-on, wet-underfoot trip.
  • Do Mullayanagiri early. The summit views are clearest in the morning before the mist rolls in.
  • Carry a change of clothes. The waterfalls are made for wading — you'll get wet.
  • Keep cash for jeeps. Hebbe and some falls are only reachable by local jeeps, paid on the spot.
  • Pack a light warm layer. Chikmagalur's hills are cool, especially in the early morning and after rain.
  • Take a guide at Belur. The carvings are astonishing, but a guide turns a pretty temple into a 900-year-old story.
  • Buy the coffee. Freshly roasted Chikmagalur beans, straight from the source, are the obvious souvenir.
